The International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare, aware of the importance of lifestyle aspects in the health of seafarers, launches a project FOOD SAFETY as one of the topics in the Seafarers' Health Information Programme, sponsored by the ITF Seafarers' Trust.
Many aspects of food handling are different onboard a ship. Therefore it is important that an individual seafarer receives information on important aspects of food handling onboard.
Several aspects of FOOD SAFETY are addressed in this campaign:
provision stores
personal hygiene related to food
food preparation and how to keep the galley and instruments germ-free
food serving and preservation
water quality
The main target group for this campaign is the "average" seafarer, who is not necessarily professionally concerned with food onboard, but as a consumer and colleague takes an interest in the way food is currently handled onboard ship.
Food handling on Cruise Ships and Ferries is completely different, restaurants serve meals to passengers and crew. This campaign is more focussed on an average merchant marine vessel and its crew.
